The Autumn Bathing Ritual: Why We’re Drawn Back to Water

There’s something about autumn that makes a bath feel different.

In summer, a quick shower often does the job. We’re out more, the evenings are lighter, and everything feels a little more energetic.

But once October arrives, the darker evenings, cooler air and slower pace seem to draw us naturally back towards warm water.

Not just to get clean, but to soak, soften and switch off.

Why water feels so comforting in autumn

Warm water has an almost immediate ability to change the pace of an evening.

You step in, your shoulders drop, your breathing slows, and suddenly there’s nowhere else you need to be for a little while.

It’s one of the simplest ways to create that feeling of retreat at home.

And I think that’s partly why bathing becomes so appealing again at this time of year. We’re starting to move away from the outward energy of summer and towards something quieter and more inward-looking.

Autumn invites us to cocoon a little.

Turn a bath into a ritual

There’s a big difference between simply having a bath and actually allowing yourself to
bathe.

Dim the lights. Put your phone somewhere else. Light a candle. Give yourself enough time that you’re not mentally counting down until the next thing on your list.

One of my favourite products for this is Temple Spa’s
DRIFT AWAY Bathing & Massage Oil. It has that deeply comforting aroma that instantly makes the whole experience feel more spa-like.

It’s also the massage oil I use in my current
WATER rituals, so for me that fragrance is now completely tied to the feeling of drifting, softening and letting go.

Add a little to warm running water, climb in and let yourself stay there for a while.

And if you want something a little more indulgent, SOUL SPA is gorgeous too. It turns the bath water the most beautiful turquoise colour, and the aroma makes the whole ritual feel wonderfully luxurious.

It’s the product I use in the warm foot soak at the beginning of WATER, so both products bring a little piece of the treatment experience into your own bathroom.

And don’t underestimate the power of simply lying still in the water for a while. No book, no scrolling, no multitasking.

Just… being.

Water doesn’t have to feel cold

When we think of WATER, we often picture cool blue seas, swimming pools and refreshing summer showers.

But water can also be wonderfully warm, nurturing and enveloping.

A hot bath.

A warm foot soak.

Steam rising from the water.

A warm cloth placed over tired feet.

Even the sensation of warm water flowing slowly and deliberately can feel incredibly calming.

That softer side of water is something I’ve been exploring in my current
Four Elements WATER rituals.

They begin with a warm SOUL SPA foot soak before moving into long, flowing massage using DRIFT AWAY oil, designed to create a sense of being supported, carried and soothed rather than hurried along.

In the longer WATER experience, I also include my
Waterfall Scalp Ritual, using a controlled flow of warm water over the scalp before wrapping the head in warm towels.

It’s a completely different interpretation of water from the bright, energising feel we associate with summer.

This is water for
drifting, softening and letting go.

Your own little autumn retreat

You don’t need an elaborate routine.

Sometimes an autumn ritual can simply be:

a warm bath,
something beautiful in the water,
a fluffy towel waiting nearby,
and permission to stay there ten minutes longer than you normally would.

Perhaps autumn isn’t really about leaving water behind at all.

Maybe it’s about discovering a slower, warmer and more comforting way to return to it.

And if you’d rather let me create the ritual for you, my
Four Elements WATER experiences are available through September and October.

Drift. Soften. Repose.

Love, Julia 🤍
