AIR: The First Breath of the Four Elements

When I first began creating The Four Elements, I knew I didn’t want them to feel like ordinary seasonal treatments.
They needed to be more than a menu. More than a theme. More than something pretty to put on a poster.
I wanted them to become a sensory journey. A collection of rituals that each held a different energy, a different feeling and a different invitation for the body.
AIR was always going to come first.
There is something beautiful about beginning with the breath. Before we move, before we soften, before we restore, we breathe. AIR is that first opening. That quiet moment when the shoulders drop, the mind begins to clear and space returns.
The Four Elements began with a simple arc:
AIR opens.
FIRE brightens.
WATER softens.
EARTH restores.
And from that, AIR slowly began to take shape.
I started with feeling rather than technique. I asked myself, “What should Air feel like?”
The answer was freshness. Lightness. Space. A sense of looking up and out after being closed in for too long.
I imagined open skies, soft cloud white, pale silver, washed blue and the bright lemony freshness of early summer air. I wanted it to feel clean and uplifting, but not sharp or bracing. More like the moment you open a window and breathe in properly.
From there, the treatment began to build itself.
The eucalyptus and wild peppermint inhalation blend became the opening breath. A way to invite you into the ritual and help the senses clear. Temple Spa’s Sugar Buff Zest brought in that bright, citrus freshness for the body polish. Eucalyptus-scented hot towels added a clean, spa-like removal, while the peppermint massage oil gave the massage its deeper therapeutic element.
Because AIR is not just about floating away. It is about creating space in the body.
The breath.
The shoulders.
The heart space.
The mind.
These are the places where I wanted the ritual to focus. The areas where life can feel held, where tension gathers and where a sense of openness can make such a difference.
As I worked on the ritual, I realised it also needed brightness from the very beginning. That is where the mini facial found its place. A cleanse with Dual Act, exfoliation with Breakfast Smoothie and moisturising with Well Balanced now begin the experience, bringing that fresh, awake, top-to-toe feeling right from the start.
That is often how my creative process works.
I begin with an idea. Then I feel my way through it. I try it, move things around, notice what feels right and listen to what the treatment seems to want to become.
It is very similar to how I used to choreograph when I was dancing. I might begin with a theme or a piece of music, but the final shape would come through movement, rhythm and instinct. The therapy has to flow. It has to make sense in the body, not just on paper.
That is what makes these rituals so personal to My Retreat.
They are not copied from anywhere. They are created here, by me, through my experience, my imagination and my hands.
Air is the first invitation in the Four Elements journey. It is fresh, uplifting and gently awakening. A ritual for when you feel heavy, crowded, tired or simply in need of space.
It is a chance to breathe again.
To soften the shoulders.
To clear the senses.
To feel open, light and gently lifted.
And as the first element, it sets the tone beautifully for what is still to come.
FIRE will brighten.
WATER will soften.
EARTH will restore.
But AIR begins everything with one simple, powerful thing.
The breath.
